Critical Evaluation of a Web Site (by Kathy Shrock) -
The 5 Ws of Website Evaluation - http://kathyschrock.net/abceval/5ws.pdf
The first assignment for your blog will be to find a really good website related to the subject in your class (Astronomy or Environmental Earth Science) and write a review of the website based on the "Critical Evaluation of a Web Site" handout posted below. The site should be one a student could use to conduct research or read current events about your subject. Post a copy of the completed handout on your blog, but write the summary and narrative parts directly into the blog. Be sure to include a link to the website. Due Friday, 12/1/06 for Astronomy and Friday, 12/8 for Environmental Earth Science. Worth 100 points for both classes. The summary and narrative should total at least 200+ words. Feel free to do complete reviews for more than one site to receive extra credit.

Teen Read Week Guidelines (2005) -
All students in all my classes are to choose a science book of their liking, read it, then review it. Reviews are due in class (or online) for peer editing by Monday, Jan. 8. First revisions are due to me by Thursday, Jan. 11. I will return the book reviews to you by Tuesday, Jan. 16 for a second revision. The final version of your book review must be posted to your blog by Friday, Jan. 19 in order to receive a grade. I recommend finishing your review early and having someone edit it before Jan. 8 to ensure you do not have to rush to finish it at the last minute. Please use the book review guide below to help with your writing. Read through the sample book reviews provided below for further guidance, and/or search for additional book reviews online. These samples will give you a really good idea of what I'm looking for. This assignment is worth 300 points, or the equivalent of one test grade. Late work will absolutely not be accepted, since you are given ample time to complete the assignment. If you pick a book that's too short (less than 100 pages), you probably won't have enough to say. If you're book is too long (over 300-400 pages), you may not have enough time to finish it. Your book review should be at least 500 words long (the sample reviews below are 750, 500, and 600 words, respectively). Don't count by hand! In Microsoft Word, go to "Tools" and "Word Count" and it will do the work for you!
