HW Tip - 9/22/06 - Scale Model of the Solar System - by Mr. D
To find the correct scaling factor, divide the distance from the Sun to the Oort Cloud by 300 (the length of a football field, in feet). The result is the scaling factor. Then, to find the distance any object will be from the Sun in our football field model, divide the object's real distance by the scaling factor. Check your results with your classmates; the correct answers may surprise you. The same scaling factor should be used to find the diameter of each object in the football field model. Just divide the real diameter by the scaling factor.
