Mr. Matthew Dawson
Science Teacher, 2001-present, Brockton High School, Brockton, MA

Master of Science, Geology, 2001, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA
Bachelor of Science, Geology, 1999, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, CA
Diploma, 1995, Downingtown Sr. High School, Downingtown, PA

Interests (academic):
I consider myself very lucky to teach the subjects I enjoy the most: astronomy, earth science, and the environment. When I can get out of the city and into an area with nice, dark skies, I enjoy stargazing and watching the occasional meteor shower. I've also spent 3 summers working with professional astronomers at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). As a university student, I spent lots of time in the field and the laboratory studying geology, and I wrote my Master's thesis in the subject of plate tectonics. Environmental science is a more recent interest, as I've observed the changing of our climate and the instability in our supply of natural resources, particularly energy. I'm very interested in "green" energy technologies, such as solar and wind power.

Interests (personal):
When I'm not busy with school and science, I enjoy spending time with my wife, family, and friends. I like cooking, and I love eating, especially Mexican and Southwestern food. Whenever we can, my wife and I like to travel and visit friends in far-off places. In the last few years, we've been to Hawaii, Iceland, Denmark, Germany, Canada, and throughout the southwestern United States. We like experiencing the culture and food in different places, but most of all, we just enjoy being outdoors, whether we're camping, hiking, or paddling.

Mr. Dawson’s Schedule

During school:
when where what
*reg. rm. B242 (sci. office) organizing science materials
*1 B242 (sci. office) "prep time" (preparing lessons)
2 B221 teaching Astronomy
3 B221 teaching Environmental Earth Science
*4L1 B242 (sci. office) eating lunch

Students are encouraged to come see me during the school day for extra help, especially if they are usually busy after school with other activities, like clubs and sports. The only time I can not provide extra help is while I'm teaching classes. The best times to find me are during my prep time and while I'm working in the peer mediation office. If necessary, I can also work with students in the morning (during registration room) and during my lunch period (4L1). Students can not get out of another class to see me for extra help, but should instead see me during a study period (Directed Academics), their lunch time, or if their teacher is absent and has no substitute.

After school:
Monday – GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) Meetings, B221, 2:15-3:00pm / BEA meetings 3:15-4:30pm (St. Edwards Church)
Tuesday – Science Dept. Computer Lab, B213, 2:15-3:00pm (I’ll usually leave by 2:33 if nobody shows up.)
Wednesday – Amnesty International Club Meetings, B221, 2:15-3:00pm (every other week)
Thursday – Science Dept. Office or Peer Mediation Room, 2:15-2:33 (except on Faculty Meeting days)
Friday – Science Dept. Office or Peer Mediation Room, 2:15-2:33
Students are encouraged to come by after school on any day of the week for extra help. I am always at school until at least 2:33 pm, and I usually stay until 3:00 or later. Below you'll find my typical after school schedule. I can work with students during GSA and Amnesty meetings, since those are run mostly by students, not me.

If you need a computer:
Try one of the IRCs: Mon. Green, Tue. Red, Wed. Azure, Thu. Yellow (remember GRAY)
Come to the Science Dept. Computer Lab in B213 on Tue.
Try the Social Science Dept. Computer Lab (run by Mr. Giovanello) on Mon.
Schedule an appointment with me to use my laptop (or another Science Dept. computer) during the school day.
